We took the telescope out last night! It was pretty awesome, except for the stand (which is motorized) would not move vertically, so we couldn't get it calibrated properly. We were still able to look at the stars and a planet (probably Jupiter but possibly Saturn) for a good hour before the clouds rolled in though. We could just make out a stripe or two and four or five moons.
The Perseids meteor shower peaks on Sunday night, and it is a new moon so viewing conditions should be perfect (weather permitting). On Saturday we'll be popping back in to Oceanside Photo and Telescope to replace my stand with one that is fully funtional and we'll be set to watch the show! We're also going to pick up one of those nifty cameras that shoot video and convert it to photos (or something), so pictures will be forthcoming!

It Begins...
At about 8:30pm last night I received my first telescope (an early birthday present from my husband). I don't have the make/model and specifications in front of me (I will list them when it is), but allow me to assure you that it is pretty awesome.
In honor of that, and the upcoming astronomical events this weekend that we plan to observe, I have decided to create a place where I can share my experiences as a (soon-to-be) budding amateur astronomer, and then some. By "and then some", I mean to share my other interests as well, including but not limited to: evolution, psychology, literature, travel and aquariums.
